Leavings by Gail Parrish, directed by Ashley Honore Roberson, October 20 through November 20, 2016 at the Greenhouse Theater Center.
The co-winner of the 2015 Dionysos Cup Festival of New Plays, Leavings follows the final days of Mama Bea, a 111 year old African American woman. Mama Bea wants to unite with Governor Skinner, the white governor of Mississippi, to set to rest the spirits that haunt her family. Her family and the governor are both descended from a nineteenth century slave owner who left the White half of the family with a heritage of privilege and the Black half with an inheritance of violence, prejudice and deprivation. Only by uniting the White and Black sides of the family in a ritual of reconciliation can the tortured spirits that haunt the family be put to rest. This is a powerful play, and we are very excited about presenting the world premiere. Click here for audition information.
Polarity presented the ambitious Afterlife Trilogy last season, publishing two novels and producing a play to demonstrate that some friendships survive beyond the grave.
